Smoke alarm alerts family to air fryer fire

Firefighters from Colchester and West Mersea were called to an incident on Mersea Road, Langenhoe at 5.31am this morning. 

On arrival, they confirmed it was a fire in the kitchen which was caused by a faulty air fryer. The property was heavily smoke damaged. 

A man was given oxygen therapy by firefighters at the scene after suffering smoke inhalation.

Crew Manager Dave Farrant said: “When we entered the house we could see it was badly smoke damaged. The majority of the fire was already out but it was still smouldering. 

Mum and baby escape caravan fire

Crews were called to Meadow Lane, Runwell, in the early hours of this morning after a mother woke to discover a fire in a cupboard next to her baby's cot. 

When crews arrived they quickly extinguished the fire and ventilated the property. 

Watch Manager Andy Smith, Wickford Fire Station, said:

"This was obviously a really scary incident for the woman involved and we're just so thankful she woke up when she did so she could get herself and her baby safely outside before calling 999.

Scrap yard fire

Firefighters were called to an incident at a scrap yard near Northwick Road in Canvey Island this afternoon. 

Crews from Canvey, Basildon (two) and Rayleigh Weir were sent to the incident. On arrival, crews confirmed that there was a large amount of scrap vehicles and containers alight at the yard. 

Incident Commander Russ Freeman said: “Firefighters have done a great job this afternoon to extinguish the fire and stop if from spreading further.
