Essex County Fire and Rescue Service supports Basildon businesses following major blaze

In the wake of a major fire at a recycling centre in Basildon last week, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) has taken action to support local businesses.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote fire safety in Essex’s businesses, the fire service’s Business Engagement Team visited businesses in the affected area to offer advice, answer concerns, and promote the importance of fire safety measures.

The team talked to the businesses about the importance of Fire Risk Assessments, a crucial step in preventing future fires and the importance of cooperation amoung neighbouring businesses, as one company’s safety practices can have a far-reaching impact on the entire industrial estate.

Business Engagement Manager Alison Loades said: “Many of the business owners told us that the recent fire had opened their eyes to the potential danger fire poses to their business. The incident served as a reminder of the importance of having robust safety procedures in place, with many businesses welcoming the opportunity to speak to us".

However, ECFRS did find some areas for improvement, particularly with businesses that had not yet completed Fire Risk Assessments. The team took the time to explain the necessity of these assessments and provided guidance on how to proceed.

In addition to fire safety, businesses also raised concerns about parking issues on the industrial estate, which could hinder access for emergency vehicles. The team reassured businesses that these concerns would be taken seriously and relayed to the appropriate authorities.

Several businesses also reported that the fire’s impact went beyond the immediate danger, with smoke from the blaze affecting air quality in the area and creating challenging working conditions during the fire. Others mentioned disruptions in their supply chains, as some companies they relied on were forced to halt operations due to direct damage from the fire. This has led many businesses to seek alternative suppliers to keep their operations running smoothly.

Despite these challenges, business owners responded positively to ECFRS’s outreach. Many expressed gratitude for the fire service’s proactive approach in the aftermath of the fire, commending the team for offering guidance and assistance during a difficult time.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service’s initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to working with local businesses, ensuring they have the tools, knowledge, and support needed to stay safe and resilient. By promoting fire safety awareness and addressing concerns directly, ECFRS is helping to build a safer, more prepared business community in Basildon and beyond.
