Crews issue advice after mirror causes bedroom fire

Crews extinguished a bedroom fire caused by a make-up mirror.

We were called to a maisonette in Brook Drive, Wickford today at 7.58am and two crews from Basildon attended.

They found a second-floor bedroom completely alight and fully extinguished the fire by 8.44am.

Watch Manager Mark Blakebrough said: "The fire was caused by a make-up mirror that was facing the sun and almost certainly reflected onto the curtains, which ignited.

Flood causes fire in commercial building

Firefighters tackled both a flood and a fire at the same building in High Road, Loughton, last night. 

Crews were already in the area after dealing with a small incident close by when a firefighter from Loughton noticed smoke coming from another building. 

On closer inspection, they realised the building was heavily smoke logged and called for another crew (Harlow) to attend. 

Watch Manager Simon Hendy, Loughton Fire Station, said:

"This was an interesting incident for us in terms of it being both a flood and a fire. 

Industrial unit fire

Firefighters were called to a fire in an industrial unit in Wickford earlier today.

Crews from Rayleigh Weir and Basildon were called to an industrial fire in Heron Avenue, Wickford at 1:34pm.

On arrival, crews reported that there was a fire in an industrial oven.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire by 2:03pm.

The cause of the fire was accidental.

Bungalow fire

Firefighters were called to a fire in a semi-detached bungalow in Holland-on-Sea.

When crews arrived at the property they reported that the fire was located in the lounge. The two occupants and their four dogs were all safely out of the property, although they were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation. Firefighters administered first aid to the casualties until the Ambulance Service arrived.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the property and extinguished the fire.

Deliberate Caravan Fire

Firefighters were called to a static caravan on fire in Hawkwell last night (Friday 7 April).

Fire crews reported that the caravan was completely alight.

Firefighters managed to get the fire under control quickly, and had completed extinguished the fire by 11:30pm.

Watch Manager Gary Shinn, Hawkwell Fire Station, said:

"Our crews did a fantastic job of stopping the fire from spreading any further. They took control of the incident and extinguished the fire quickly and efficiently."

Fire in industrial recycling yard

Firefighters were called to an industrial recycling yard in Shoeburyness this evening. On arrival, firefighters reported a large amount of metal, mostly crushed vehicles, was on fire.

Control Officers received over 50 calls to the fire as it was creating a lot of smoke and could be seen from the road.

Crews free man after road traffic collision

Firefighters rescued a man following a road traffic collision in Tolleshunt D'Arcy.

We were called to Maldon Road today at 5.14pm and crews from Maldon and Colchester attended.

A car was in a ditch and the driver was trapped. Crews stabilised the vehicle and used specialist cutting equipment to free the man by 5.55pm.

They administered first aid before leaving him in the care of the Ambulance Service.
