PHOTOS: Bonfire causes field fire

Firefighters are advising the public not to have bonfires, campfires or disposable BBQs until we’ve seen some more rain across the county.

Crews were called to a field fire in East Tilbury Road, Linford today after a bonfire caught dry stubble alight.

Initially two crews were sent to the scene and reported that the fire was spreading quickly.

A further four crews were called to assist and crews acted quickly to surround the fire - which was affecting five acres of stubble.

Firefighters extinguished the fire by 2pm.

Eight crews at fire in Billericay

Crews have extinguished a fire at a restaurant in Billericay.

Firefighters were called today at 5.04pm and crews from Billericay, Orsett, Basildon and Brentwood initially attended.

Four more crews, from Great Baddow, Epping, Corringham and Basildon, in addition to two Aerial Ladder Platforms, from Southend and Grays, were tackling the fire at its height.

As of 7.30pm, the fire was extinguished and crews remained on the scene to check for hotspots.

Battery safety warning after e-scooter fire

Crews have issued safety advice after an electric scooter caught fire in Dovercourt.

Firefighters were called to Chaffinch Drive today at 12.55pm and found an e-scooter alight.

Crews extinguished the fire and made sure the e-scooter was completely cool by 1.22pm. 

Station Manager Jason Gould said: "The owner was fixing the rear mud guard and accidentally damaged the battery pack, which started to spark and cause small explosions before catching fire.

We were assisted by colleagues from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service at a barn fire in Belchamp Road, Pentlow this morning. 

We sent a crew from Sible Hedingham and were joined by Suffolk’s crews from Clare and Long Melford.

On arrival, crews reported that a barn containing farm machinery was alight. Firefighters requested the help of a Suffolk crew from Haverhill and a water bowser from Halstead, Essex.

Crews worked together to extinguish the fire by 9:45am.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out.

Overheated batteries cause house fire

Firefighters were called to a house fire in Eagle Close, Waltham Abbey last night after neighbours could smell smoke and heard smoke alarms going off.

Crews from Loughton and Waltham Abbey Fire Station reported that a two storey house was smoke logged with a fire contained to one room.

Firefighters extinguished the fire by 9:16pm and believe it was caused after batteries left on charge had overheated.

Firefighters are warning residents to makes sure bonfire embers are fully cooled before you leave them after embers caught an outbuilding alight in Tolleshunt Knights last night.

Crews from Tiptree, Tollesbury and Colchester were called to Barnhall Road in Tolleshunt Knights where they reported an outbuilding - measuring 8 metres x 6 metres - was on fire.

Firefighters worked to remove the roof tiles from the summerhouse to extinguish the fire by 12:30am.

Bonfire destroys two sheds and fence panels

Firefighters are giving bonfire safety advice after a bonfire placed too close to a shed caught two sheds and fence panels alight in Harlow this evening.

Two crews from Harlow were assisted by our colleagues from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

On arrival, crews reported that a sheds was on fire and the fire had spread to fence panels and a neighbouring shed.

Crews worked together to extinguish the fire by 8:03pm.

Firefighters helped to prevent a field fire from destroying crops in Felsted today.

Two crews form Chelmsford were called to a field fire in Hartford End, Felsted. The farmer had been using machinery when a stone sparked and ignited the dry grass on the field.

On arrival, crews reported that several acres of grass had caught alight.

Firefighters requested crews from Wethersfield and Witham fire stations to help supply water in the area.

Crews extinguished the fire by 2:14pm and prevented it from spreading to the neighbouring crop fields.

Firefighters spent the afternoon and evening at a field fire in Northwick Road, Canvey yesterday.

Crews from Canvey, Rayleigh, Leigh and Great Baddow were sent to the scene alongside an off-road vehicle from Burnham as well as a water bowser from Corringham.

Approximately four acres of shrubland was alight.

Firefighters worked together to carry out a controlled burn as there were no surrounding risks to any other properties.

Crews then worked to extinguish the fire and left the scene at 9:30pm.

PHOTO: Outbuilding fire spreads to two bungalows

Firefighters were called to an outbuilding fire in Canvey early this morning that spread to two bungalows.

Crews from Canvey, Leigh and Rayleigh were called to Vaagen Road, Canvey at 12:12am.

On arrival, crews reported that an outbuilding fire was affecting two bungalows and requested a crew from Basildon to assist.

Firefighters worked to prevent the fire damaging the second bungalow and extinguished the fire by 1:18am.

The roof of one of the bungalows was destroyed and has rendered a family homeless.
