Wildfire season 2025: How farmers can help Essex firefighters protect their land

After the record-breaking wildfires of 2022, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has made major changes to how it prepares for and responds to wildfires, changes that are already making a difference. With 2025 expected to bring another hot, dry summer, we’re asking the farming community to help us help you.
In 2022, our crews faced an unprecedented number of wildfires across the county. The scale, intensity, and pace of the incidents placed significant demands on our firefighters. Since then, we’ve taken time to reflect, adapt, and equip ourselves with better tools and smarter tactics.
Smarter firefighting on the ground
Our new wildfire strategy focusses on controlling the fire from the tail and flanks, a proven method that narrows the fire front and brings it under control faster and more safely. It also reduces the intense physical demands on crews, allowing us to respond more sustainably during prolonged incidents.
To support this, we’ve invested in new equipment including: lightweight wildfire helmets for comfort and endurance and high-powered wildfire blowers to influence fire direction
These updates mean we’re better prepared, but we still need your help.
Here’s how farmers can support us
1. Use what3words for reporting fires
In rural areas, addresses and farm names aren’t always enough. what3words gives a precise 3m x 3m location. When every second counts, this helps us get to the right spot, fast.
2. Work with us on fuel breaks
If a wildfire approaches, we may ask for your help to create fuel breaks using ploughs or machinery. This must be done under direction from fire officers on the scene to ensure safety and coordination.
3. Tell us about controlled burns
Planning a bonfire or other controlled fire? Let us know. This prevents false alarms and allows us to monitor if necessary. A quick phone call could save resources being sent to a non-emergency.
Making Essex safer together
We know the impact wildfires can have on rural businesses, land, and livelihoods. We’re doing everything we can to be ready, but the farming community’s role is vital. Let’s work together this summer to protect Essex’s countryside.
