Hazard: This product presents a serious risk due to the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning.
Corrective action: The products have been withdrawn from sale.
Fire services in the UK have been notified of a worrying increase in incidents involving dangerously high CO levels caused by ceremonial wood-burning products.
Since the beginning of 2024, firefighters in the UK have responded to at least six separate incidents where carbon monoxide alarms were triggered by these items. In one particularly concerning case, CO levels inside a home soared to 1800 parts per million (ppm) - a level that could lead to unconsciousness and death within minutes.
Despite warnings issued in 2023, these products remain in use, posing a serious risk to life.
The burning of these wood charcoal products appears tied to cultural practices, including ceremonial uses and the preparation of henna tattoos. However, these traditions often involve burning the charcoal indoors without adequate ventilation, significantly increasing the risk of CO poisoning. Adding to the danger, the packaging of these products lacks essential safety warnings about the release of carbon monoxide when burned indoors. This absence leaves users unaware of the potential deadly consequences.
It is vital for everyone to understand that burning any material indoors without proper ventilation can lead to CO poisoning. Symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and confusion can escalate rapidly to unconsciousness and even death.
Staying safe
- Always burn wood or charcoal outdoors in ventilated areas.
- Install CO alarms in your home to detect dangerous levels early.
- Be aware of CO poisoning symptoms like headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
