Essex Fire Museum named among Top Icons in Essex

Essex Fire Museum in Grays has been officially recognised as one of the top 50 icons in Essex, following a public vote hosted by Visit Essex.
The Museum was voted 19th in the ‘Top 50 Icons of Essex’ list, which saw more than 1,600 people have their say on the attractions, destinations and places that make Essex so special.
Visit Essex praised the county’s wide range of iconic locations – from historic landmarks and coastal gems to family-friendly attractions – and Essex Fire Museum is proud to be among them.
The Museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the county’s firefighting history, is home to vintage fire engines, historical uniforms, equipment and stories from across the decades. It also provides an engaging and educational day out for families, schools and history enthusiasts alike.
Heritage and Volunteering Lead Dan Bailey said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to have been recognised by the people of Essex. Being part of this list alongside some of the county’s most loved attractions is a real honour, and a testament to the support of our wonderful visitors and volunteers.”
As well as regular public open days, the Museum is also proud to support its local community through inclusive events. On 6 April it hosted a dementia-friendly open day in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society and Thurrock Dementia Friendly Communities group. Around 40 people attended and enjoyed exploring the exhibits, trying on helmets and uniforms and relaxing with tea and cake. One visitor even donated a painting of a Victorian firefighter rescuing a family.
Dan added:
“It was a really lovely day – we had a great time with our visitors and lots of laughs too. We’re already looking forward to the next one.”
The next dementia-friendly open day will take place on Saturday 15 June. Anyone interested in coming along can contact the Museum team via museum@essex-fire.gov.uk.
