Christmas presents I would never buy as a firefighter

As a firefighter, safety is always on my mind, even when I am not at work. And with the festive season approaching, I can't help but notice that some popular gift items can actually pose a serious fire hazard. Although these may be attractive for Christmas gifts, here are the top 4 items I would never buy for my friends and family.

1. Candles

While candles create a cozy atmosphere, they’re also one of the top causes of accidental fires in homes. During the winter months and Christmas season, people often leave candles burning unattended. All it takes is a brief distraction for things to go very wrong. Instead, opt for battery-operated LED candles. They offer the same ambiance without any of the fire risk.

2. Cheap phone chargers

We all love a good bargain, but when it comes to chargers and other electrical accessories, quality is crucial. Cheap, unbranded chargers are notorious for overheating and even exploding. They may not meet safety standards, which significantly increases the risk of fire. If you’re gifting a charger, look for branded, certified products. It’s worth the extra cost to ensure the recipient’s safety.

3. E-Scooters

E-scooters have become trendy gift, but many people don’t realise they are actually illegal to use on public roads and pavements. They also contain lithium-ion batteries which pose a fire risk, and we’ve seen an increase in fires caused by e-scooters in the last few years.

4. Electrical items from cheap websites

An unbranded electrical item from a dubious website might seem like a budget-friendly gift, but as firefighters, we see the consequences of these purchases all too often. These items may not have passed proper safety inspections and could pose an electrocution or fire risk. Stick to known brands or reputable retailers. And if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is!

As a firefighter, I see how small oversights can lead to big problems. When shopping for gifts, think beyond the short-term excitement and consider potential risks. Safe and thoughtful choices can help ensure that your Christmas is a happy one and free of hazards. So, this season, let’s keep safety high up on our shopping list!
