Smoke alarms alert resident to electrical fire
Firefighters are highlighting the importance of working smoke alarms after they alerted a resident to an electrical fire in Chelmsford earlier today.
Crews were called to a house fire in Wright Mead, Springfield at 9:58am after the resident heard their smoke alarms going off.
On arrival, crews reported that there was a fire in the kitchen of a semi detached house.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire by 10:56am and believe it was caused by an electrical fault in a fridge freezer.
The kitchen was badly fire damaged and the house was left smoke damaged throughout.
Crew Manager Matt Jamieson from Chelmsford Fire Station said: “This incident really highlights how important it is to have working smoke alarms at home.
“This fire spread rapidly throughout the kitchen and filled the house with smoke and with the smoke alarms going off, the resident had time to escape the house and call us out.
“We recommend you have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home. We also recommend you test them regularly. Working smoke alarms save lives.
“If you or someone you know hasn’t got working smoke alarms at home, we can visit your home and fit them for free. Find out more about our home fire safety visits at www.essex-fire.gov.uk/book or by calling 0300 303 0088.”
