An investigation into the cause of the found it was accidental due to an electrical fault.
Firefighters were called to a roof fire in Bishopsteignton, Shoeburyness at 8:59am.
On arrival, crews reported the roof of a three-storey house was on fire.
Crews worked to extinguish the fire in sections. Firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus worked to extinguish the fire from inside the building while crews used an Aerial Ladder Platform to extinguish the fire from above.
The fire was extinguished by 12pm. It was contained to the roof but due to the smoke and water damage on the second floor, the house has been left uninhabitable.
An investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out today.
Station Manager Mark Elliot said: “Crews have worked hard to prevent the fire spreading throughout the rest of the property.
“We will remain on scene for a few hours carrying out a fire investigation and making the scene safe.”
