Update 11pm

Firefighters remain at the scene, using a hose reel to cool hotspots. 1 x Aerial Ladder Platform is still in use.

Relief crews will be taking over at 12:30am. 

Update 6:30pm

Firefighters are working to dismantle the building to tackle remaining hotspots.

Crews will remain overnight to monitor the hotspots.

An investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.

Station Manager Al Green, Incident Commander said: “We had two priorities at this incident which were to stop the fire spreading to neighbouring units and to prevent it affecting local residents. Through the hard work of crews, we were able to achieve these two priorities. 

“We’d like to thank the public for their patience while we deal with this incident and we'd like to say a big thank you to our colleagues in Essex Police who were brilliant at the scene today.”

Update 4pm

Firefighters have almost extinguished the fire and will now work towards taking the building apart to make it safe.

Crews are making steady progress to extinguish the fire in sections. 


Crews are currently at the scene of an industrial unit fire in Towers Road, Grays.

If you live or work in the area, please keep your windows and doors shut as lots of smoke is coming from the scene.

Firefighters are currently working to extinguish a fire in an industrial unit measuring approximately 35 metres by 35 metres. 

Crews are working to extinguish the fire in sections from the ground and from above using an Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP). A second ALP has been requested and is coming from Chelmsford Fire Station.

This is an on-going incident and we’ll provide updates as soon as we can.
