Firefighters have now left the scene, with the exception of one fire crew as a precaution. The Gas Board are continuing to make steady progress and police officers are managing the safety cordon.

The road will remain closed both ways for much of this evening.


UPDATE 5:30pm

Firefighters are continuing to work alongside partners to make the scene of a gas leak on the A127 safe.

If you live nearby, you may notice the smell of gas - there is no cause for concern, but please keep your windows and doors closed to avoid the smell.

The road is likely to remain closed in both directions for some time this evening - please continue to avoid the area and encourage others to do so. Thank you for your continued patience.


UPDATE 4:30pm

Firefighters remain at the scene of a gas leak on the A127 in Southend at the Bell Junction. 

Crews are working alongside the gas board and police colleagues to make the scene safe. 

Please continue to avoid the area and tell family and friends travelling nearby to avoid the area.
