PHOTO: Firefighter issues warning after log burner causes garage fire
Firefighters were called to reports of a garage fire in Rayne on Saturday 20 March.
When fire crews arrived they reported that the detatched garage, which measured approx. 6m x 4m, was completely alight. Crews gave first aid to one person who was suffering with the effects of smoke inhalation.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and stopped it spreading to the house next door.
Crew Manager Will McGrath said:
"The fire had started accidentally when the door of the log burner in the garage was left slightly open and the occupant left the garage to go to a shop. The log burner caused radiated heat to ignite the contents of flammable liquid on the above table and the fire quickly spread throughout the garage.
"Unfortunately all six motorbikes which the occupant was working on at the time were all destroyed in the fire.
"Incidents like this show how important it is to take extra care when using an open fire or log burner at home.
"You should only use suitable fuel for your burner, ensure it is kept in good condition and is swept regulary. It is also important that the area around the burner is kept completely free of anything that could catch fire."
