Outbuilding fire

Crews are currently at the scene of a fire in Horseman Side, Navestock.

Firefighters were originally called to reports of an out-of-control bonfire, and on arrival reported that a number of outbuildings and vehicles were alight and immediately requested more support from further crews.

At 1.45 am Group Manager Paul Chipperfield said:

"The affected area, which contains outbuildings and vehicles, measures around 40 x 40 metres.

"Crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service are working with London Fire Brigade in complex conditions with difficult water supply.

"We've divided the incident into three sections and have now brought the fire under control."

"If you live in the local area please keep your windows and doors shut as the fire is producing a lot of smoke."

Update 6.30am

Three fire engines remain at the scene and crews report that they are making steady progress in dampening down final hotspots. Firefighters are working with the farmer to make sure the whole area is cool and safe.

Officers will carry out an investigation into the cause as soon as it is possible.

Update 12pm

The last crew at the scene, on-call firefighters from Billericay, left at 10.49am. A fire investigation will be carried out this afternoon to establish the cause.

Update 2.50pm

The cause of the fire has been recorded as undetermined. The Fire Investigator suspects it was caused by an electrical fault but, due to the extent of the damage, is unable to say for certain.
