Has your chimney been swept? Crews extinguish chimney fire
Firefighters have extinguished a chimney fire in Canewdon.
Our Control team were called yesterday (Tuesday 24 January) at 10.43pm to reports of a fire in Creeksea Ferry Road.
A crew from Rochford attended and used thermal imaging cameras to inspect the chimney. They then used rods, a hose and a stirrup pump to clear a build-up of soot and put out a small fire.
It was fully extinguished by 1.35am.
Crew Manager Shaun May said: “If you have an open fire or log burner, we recommend you have your chimney swept at least once a year - or more regularly if you burn wood.”
Chimney safety
A clean chimney can help prevent fires and structural damage to your property.
- Have your chimney swept at least once a year, or more frequently if you burn wood
- Inspect your chimney regularly, particularly in the roof space, to ensure that it is sound and that sparks or fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks
- Buy suitable fuels. Using the wrong type of fuel can damage your liner or cause a build-up of soot
- Use a fire or spark guard
- Make sure your fire burns down well before you go to bed
Could you be an on-call firefighter?
Rochford's firefighters are on-call firefighters; they live or work within 5 minutes of their station and are paid to protect their community.
If you live or work within 5 minutes of an on-call fire station, you could be an on-call firefighter too.
