Grill causes flat fire in Great Baddow
Crews were called to a flat fire in Heycroft Way, Great Baddow earlier this evening, when a grill caught fire and spread throughout the flat.
Firefighters were called to a fire in a block of flats in Great Baddow at 7:42pm, when the occupant discovered a fire in their home.
On arrival, crews confirmed that there was a fire in the kitchen, which had spread into the studio flat. Other flats in the building were evacuated as a precaution.
Firefighters from Chelmsford and Stansted worked quickly to extinguish the fire by 8:16pm.
The flat has suffered significant fire damage, and is not currently habitable.
Crew Manager at Chelsmford Fire Station, Mark Curtis, said “The crews did a great job to contain the fire and prevent additional damage to the property.
"I also want to thank Pauline, an ECFRS off-duty Firefighter, who knocked doors to get everyone out of the building whilst our crews made their way to the incident.
"Smoke alarms will alert you to the first signs of fire in your home. We’re urging Essex residents to make sure they have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of their homes, and to test them at least once a month."
Please follow our safety advice for cooking safely:
- Take care when cooking with oil - it gets very got and can set alight easily
- Never leave cooking unattended
- Avoid leaving children in the kitchen alone when cooking on the hob. Keep matches and saucepan handles out of their reach to keep them safe
- Make sure saucepan handles don’t stick out – so they don’t get knocked off the stove
- Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob
- Double check the cooker is off when you’ve finished cooking
Could you be an on-call firefighter?
Firefighters from Stansted are on-call Firefighters, who all live or work within 5 minutes of an on-call fire station and attend incidents.
If you live or work within 5 minutes of an on-call fire station, you could be an on-call firefighter too.
