Five people rescued from flooded road

Firefighters are urging drivers not to take any risks on flooded roads after crews rescued five people on The Strood, West Mersea today.

Crews were called to The Strood, West Mersea at 1:47pm after two cars became trapped in the rising tidal water.

Water rescue trained crews worked to rescue one person from their car and four people in a van.

Watch Manager Gary Clarke from Colchester Fire Station said: “This incident shows how easily you can find yourself in trouble on a flooded road. It takes less water than you’d think for your car to break down or even to float out of control.

“Our advice would be not to take any risks, if you can’t see any signs about how deep the water is, don’t risk driving through it. For flooded roads, turn around and find another route and for tidal roads, wait for the tide to go back out.”
