Firefighters issue safety advice after fuel burner fire

Firefighters have issued safety advice after a family were made homeless when a fuel burner fire grew out of control.

The burner, which uses bioethanol fuel, ignited some spilt fuel which then spread to curtains.

Mark Blakebrough, Watch Manager, said: "These types of fuel burners are becoming more and more popular and we know that people may think about trying different things to stay warm this winter.

"Despite that, fuel burners like this can be incredibly dangerous if used indoors - if the fuel is spilt, please clean it up immediately to avoid any risk of fire spread - and never use a fuel burner or candles near flammable items like furniture or clothing.

"If you do use a fuel burner in your home, never attempt to pour water on it to extinguish it - you should be given a tool to dampen or extinguish the flames safely when you buy it. If the fire does become unsafe and it can't be extinguished easily, always call the fire service out."

Fortunately, no-one was injured in this incident.
