Field fire
Firefighters were called to a field fire near Godman Road in Chadwell St Mary at 4:35pm.
On arrival, crews reported an area of approximately 150 metres by 30 metres of crop and bushes was on fire.
Six crews and two off-road vehicles from Billericay and Hawkell worked alongside local farmers to create a fire break and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby garages and surrounding fields.
Firefighters extinguished the fire by 6:05pm. The cause of the fire could not be determined.
Station Manager Scott Fretton said: “Crews worked really hard to surround the fire and prevent it spreading to people’s garages and other fields. A really big thank you to the local farmers who helped us at the scene. Firefighters worked alongside local farmers to create a fire break and this really makes a massive difference to us in containing the fire.
“The cause of the fire is undetermined but with more hot weather on the way we’d really encourage people to be extra cautious while everything is so dry. Avoid having bonfires or disposable BBQs, stub out all cigarettes properly before discarding of them, take any litter home with you if you can’t find a bin and if you see someone starting a fire, please call 999 immediately.”
