Crews issue safety advice after candle starts kitchen fire
Crews have issued safety advice after a candle started a kitchen fire in a flat in Harlow.
We were called to an eighth floor property in Willowfield today at 1.59pm.
Crews from Harlow and Old Harlow attended and extinguished a small fire in a kitchen by 2.25pm.
Crew Manager Catherine Smith said: "A candle left unattended had set fire to plastic items on the worktop.
"Thankfully the occupant did the right thing when they noticed the fire, they got out, called 999 and stayed out.
"However, the incident is a reminder to keep an eye on candles at all times. If you need to leave the room make sure you blow the candle out.”
Our candle safety advice
- Consider using LED candles, they are much safer and give the same warm glow
- Put candles out when you leave the room, even if it's only for a moment
- Make sure they’re put out completely before you go to bed
- Make sure candles are secured in a proper holder and are away from flammable materials
- Never leave children alone with lit candles
- Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and debris
- Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, but avoid drafts, vents or air currents which can cause rapid or uneven burning
- Keep the wick short and trim before burning where necessary
