Sensory Smoke Alarms for people with hearing loss
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) provides and installs free specialist sensory alarms for Essex residents with hearing loss. These alarms alert users to fire, even if their hearing aids are removed at night.
Sensory smoke alarms are ceiling-mounted and wirelessly linked to devices that use strobe lights and vibrations. A bedside unit flashes and triggers a vibrating pad under the pillow when smoke is detected, ensuring the user wakes up and takes action. Multiple alarms can be installed throughout the home for added safety.

Online Home Fire Safety Check
To help reduce house fires in Essex, we’re encouraging everyone to complete our Online Home Fire Safety Check. This simple tool assesses your fire risk based on your home, lifestyle, smoke alarms, cooking habits, and escape plans. You'll receive personalised advice and practical tips to make your home safer.
You can complete the check for yourself or on behalf of a family member. Friends, neighbours, carers, support workers, and partner agencies can also use it. In some cases, we may recommend a free home visit to provide in-person advice and fit smoke alarms if needed.
